Bluefin tuna

Thunnus thynnus

The Bluefin tuna occurs mostly offshore, around seamounts, and occasionally inshore.

Conservation Status

The occurrence of bluefin tunas in the Azores has been inconsistent. Although this species has been subject to over-fishing in other areas, it has not been red listed by the IUCN for the North Atlantic. Locally caught bluefin tuna have been allocated a minimum commercial size of 70cm or 30 kg.

Bluefin tuna have a maximum reported size of 300 cm (700 kg) and a maximum reported age of 20 years.
